Zeev, one does not benefit, other than on paper, from a stock buyback or any other company event, until one sells ! If I buy more stock in a company that I already hold, I do not pay taxes on the sum I use to buy the new shares. Presumably, you are happy that MRK bought their shares because it will make your shares more valuable- so won't you pay cap gains on that increased value when you eventually sell? If not, please tell me your secret- I'd love to know! <g>

In many cases a company will buy its own stock because it is languishing, and the co thinks it is undervalued, or they have no other means of making the share price go up. And often the stock will continue to languish.
