Hillary Clinton: why I stood by my man - report
LONDON, July 31 (Reuters) - Hillary Clinton, U.S. First Lady and likely candidate for the U.S. Senate, has talked for the first time about why she stood by her man and blamed the President's infidelity on childhood abuse, said the Sunday Times.

President Bill Clinton's wife said his two-timing ''weakness'' stemmed from a trauma caused by childhood abuse, the report said.

Quoting extracts from an interview due to be published this week in Talk, a new magazine edited by ex-New Yorker editor Tina Brown, the report quoted the First Lady blaming the President's childhood experiences for a chain reaction of philandering.

Referring to her husband as a ''hard dog to keep on the porch,'' she said dealing with ''bimbo eruptions'' had long been part of their marriage.

For many years she believed his weakness was under control until the scandal of his sexual relations with White House intern Monica Lewinsky erupted and at one stage threatened the presidency.

Clinton said in the report that the affair with Lewinsky took place after the death of the President's father and their friend Vincent Foster.

''He couldn't protect me, so he lied...this was a sin of weakness.''

''Yes, he has weaknesses. Yes, he needs to be more disciplined, but it is remarkable given his background that he turned out to be the kind of person he is, capable of such leadership,'' she was quoted saying in the Sunday Times.

''He was so young, barely four, when he was scarred by abuse. There was terrible conflict between his mother and grandmother. A psychologist told me that being in the middle of a conflcit between two women is the worst possible situations,'' Clinton said.

She went on to describe her vigil for many years to monitor her husband's faithfulness.

''I thought he had conquered it. I thought he understood it, but he didn't go deep enough or work hard enough,'' she said.

Asked whether their marriage could survive the strains of her embarking on a solo political career in the Senate, she said:

''He's responsible for his behaviour whether I'm there or 100 miles away...it is their (the person's) responsibility whether it's gambling, drinking or women. Nobody can do it for you.''

Clinton is currently on a campaign-style tour in New York. If she decides to run for the Senate seat being vacated next year she will be the first president's wife ever to seek office.

More of ***WHY SOME OF US FEAR CLINTON***

"....The plaintiffs would like to question Flowers about the series of
break-ins at her residence, threats made to herself and to her
mother, and the savage beating of a neighbor who had video tape
of Clinton entering Flowers' apartment.

The neighbor's name was Gary Johnson. The video camera in his
home security system happened to catch Clinton letting himself in
to Flowers' apartment on several occasions. But Clinton had
denied in an interview on "60 Minutes" that he had ever visited
Flowers. Johnson's big mistake was to boast of having the tapes
while drinking at a local night spot. On June 26, 1992, three
weeks before the Democratic convention, he was visited by three
strapping big fellows with short hair who resembled state
troopers. They slapped him around a bit and demanded the tapes,
which he promptly handed over. But instead of leaving, they
continued to beat him, breaking both of his elbows, perforating
his bladder and rupturing his spleen, which had to be removed.
Mr. Johnson, who is now permanently institutionalized, believes
they intended to kill him.

This and other ugly little incidents involving people who were
not very good friends of Bill lend weight to the contention that
the nine potential witnesses in the Browning lawsuit have reason
to feel intimidated. Not that anyone would ever suspect it from
reading the censored, slanted, spun and spotty news in the
mainstream press, whose mind-numbed minions never tire of
reminding us that they are the main bastion of American freedom.
Their performance in suppressing this story is reminiscent of the
role played by much of the German press in ignoring Nazi thuggery
during the 1920s and 1930s. Of those who think it can't happen
here I would ask, who's going to stop it -- the lily-livered
liars who style themselves "journalists" in modern imperial
Amerika?..."

WHEN NEWS IS NO LONGER NEWS
Editorial

By Marvin Lee

You know you live in a banana republic when news of corruption in
government is no longer treated as news but is yawned at,
shrugged off, and considered redundant. Consider these
revelations from just this past week:

* The Associated Press reported that the high-profile
Chinagate and Whitewater cases against Clinton friends
Webster Hubbell and Charlie Trie were not assigned randomly
to judges as is customary, but were assigned to judges
appointed by President Clinton and affiliated with his
defenders. Both judges, Thomas Friedman and James Robertson,
immediately proceeded to throw out key counts against the
president's friends, raising questions about their
impartiality.

* A Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO)
lawsuit was filed in amended form against the White House and
Loral, Inc. by Loral shareholders alleging a conspiracy to
sellout U.S. national security interests for political
contributions.

* Fox News reported that the Justice Department is ignoring
evidence and testimony given by Charlie Trie and Johnny Chung
that link Democratic Party officials to the Chinese military
through political contributions.

* Judicial Watch pointed out that the fine of $90,000 to be
paid by President Clinton for lying in court will likely be
picked up by the Chinese through their donations to his Legal
Defense Fund, while the whistleblower who revealed the
physical evidence of his lies faces 10 years in prison if a
political trial of her proceeds.

Yet none of this is news because it is what we have come to
expect. It is a mere repetition or confirmation of the
revelations of the week before and the week before that. We know
our government is absolutely corrupt -- from the executive, over
the legislative, to the judicial branch and the media that is
supposed to watch it. We know we live in a banana republic.

To the Editor:

Regarding Marvin Lee's article "Lawlessness in the White
House" (7/26/99), all of the points he makes are very valid.
Yet at the end of the article, he states that Americans
basically don't care about the corruption in the Clinton
White House. I dare say that Americans do care; yet our
attempts to be heard fall on deaf ears. Our Senators and
Congressmen, if they pretend to be at all concerned, will not
do anything about the myriad of treasonous, perjurious,
immoral, and deceitful activities of Bill Clinton and his
underlings. I have emailed both of my senators countless
times and yet I receive either a) a form-letter response
which does not address my main point or b) a personal letter
which indicates that my senator is very concerned too and is
grateful for my letter.

It is no wonder that most Americans appear to have given up;
how very discouraging it is to have one's concerns ignored,
yawned at, or dismissed outright by those voted into office.
As a matter of fact, my Congressman, Dennis Kucinich, refuses
to have an email address or a website; apparently, he'd
rather not hear from his constituency.

While I do keep a close eye on current events (thanks to the
non-mainstream media), I have no doubt that Washington will
continue on business as usual, regardless of how many emails
I send or letters to the editor I compose.
