Oh, I didn't miss anything. The definition I quoted was straight out of The Merriam-Webster Dictionary pocket book edition, published in 1974, and there was nothing in it like the definition your dictionary has. I have another dictionary, the New World Dictionary of the American Language 2nd college edition which has an even different definition:

needless repetition of an idea in a different word, phrase, or sentence; redundancy; pleonasm (Ex: "necessary essentials")

Isn't it odd that three different dictionaries give three conflicting definitions of a word? Gosh, if you can't trust the dictionary, who can you trust? <g>

As for your dictionary's definition, if you think that characterizes Bob's work, then you haven't been paying attention.
