Clinton lost the election in 1980 but didn't leave office until early 1981. Also, from what I read, it was 1981 when the professor made the statement and could have been referring to the recent past office that Clinton held. We still call ex-presidents president, don't we ?

The article said 16 years ago, so it was 1983. One could name a couple of dozen politicians in the Democratic Socialist party that they were hopeful of, including Cuomo.
