I try not to take a loss.

Nobody wants to take a loss. Occasionally, you have to take a loss for tax purposes. I've used the 30-day rule only a couple of times over the years. It really depends on the stock. Sometimes, you can't take the chance to be out for 30 days (e.g. there is a chance of some big announcement that quadruples the price while you're on the sidelines).
