Hi Doug, re: the OSI Reference Model, rather than reinvent the wheel, let me refer you to a source on the 'net.

Another link that is also somewhat useful follows, but it doesn't acurately show some of the true the delineations of what they are calling Layer 1 protocols. What they are showing as Layer 1's, like ATM, also extend into Layer 2 after convergence takes place at the lower sub-layer of Layer 2, and this is not shown in the visual. But the link is otherwise useful for a broader perspective of the greater playing field.
