Was much the same on the original (wooden) sailfish we had on a large lake in Maine some 40 years ago. You were only inches from the water, and the accepted way for those who accepted high risk for high speed to sail them was to lie flat along the top edge, heeled well over, steering with your toes, with one hand on the sheet and one hand pressing down on the centerboard. If you got a luff, well, down you went. But while you were up there, you were REALLY up there! I won a bunch of races doing that when others didn't dare to or didn't have the skill to steer with their toes.
