Sun in good shape:

CFO Michael Lehman also noted that Sun continued to take market share from Hewlett Packard (NYSE:HP - news) and IBM (NYSE:IBM - news) , and is making inroads on Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT - news) dominance in operating systems.

Sun's competitive positioning continues to strengthen with strong growth in software and storage revenue. Enterprise storage revenue was up 35% in the quarter, which caused management to draw comparisons to EMC's (NYSE:EMC - news) most recent quarter that saw 36% growth. Although coming off of a small base, enterprise software sales grew over 50% in the first quarter.

Sun's dominance of the server market was validated by a recent study by International Data Corporation (IDC). According to IDC, Sun registered a 33% factory revenue growth rate in the first quarter, while IBM grew 4% and Compaq (NYSE:CPQ - news) and H-P saw no change.

Sun's clear leadership shows that end users, especially Internet service providers, look to Sun for its reputation for high availability and unmatched scalability. This helps explain why over 80% of Internet traffic and 10 out of the top 12 Internet service providers run on Sun equipment (according to CEO Scott McNealy in a recent Squawk Box interview on CNBC).
