Whatever problems you may have with a broker, and however frustrating a daytrading experience, this is not the way to deal with these issues;msnbc.com <<12 dead in Atlanta shootings Suspect still at large, described as disgruntled day trader MSNBC STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS ATLANTA, July 29 — Police launched a massive manhunt Thursday for a man suspected of killing his wife and two children, and then going to two Atlanta brokerages and killing nine people and wounding at least 12 others. Witnesses said the man was angry about recent losses in the stock market, which has been volatile in recent days. MARK BARTON'S wife and two children were found dead in the Bristol Green Apartments in Stockbridge, 16 miles southeast of Atlanta. Police said they weren't sure when the three were killed but it was at least 24 hours earlier than the office shootings. Barton, 44, also was a suspect in the 1993 slaying of his then-wife and mother-in-law in Cedar Bluff, Ala. According to news reports, he refused a polygraph and investigators lacked enough evidence for an arrest. Barton remains suspect in '93 slaying case On Thursday afternoon, some 200 police officers worked to control the scene at the offices of All-Tech Investment Services and cordoned off a busy area around Piedmont Road in Atlanta's fashionable Buckhead section, where the brokerage shootings occurred. Campbell said it would take at least until 9 p.m. ET to secure the scene. Police hunted floor-to-floor in neighboring buildings in search of the gunman. “There's an awful lot of blood everywhere,” said Mayor Bill Campbell. Office workers were initially told to barricade themselves inside, but were later led out by police in small groups. A shooting was reported about 3 p.m. ET at Two Security Center, an office building that houses the All-Tech Investment Services, as well as a travel agency and other offices. Barton then began shooting at another brokerage office, the mayor said. Four of the victims were killed in one building and five in the other, he said. Some people were still hiding in offices nearly three hours after the shooting. The gunman is described as 6-foot-4, white, 220 pounds with a receding hairline. He was believed to be driving a dark Green 1992 Ford Aerostar van with Georgia license plate number 101CPD, police said. FORMER CHEMIST Campbell said Barton is a former chemist who started day trading and had wide swings in his portfolio. The mayor quoted witnesses as saying Barton was upset about recent stock losses, but said there were no accounts of any specific provocation on Thursday. The gunman had a brief conversation about the market being down before he opened fire with a .45-caliber and 9 mm guns, Campbell said.”We are in mourning for our city and for these nine people who have lost their lives so tragically here this afternoon,” said Campbell. He said of the 12 injured, seven had gunshot wounds and the others were hurt trying to escape. Seven were in critical condition at the trauma center of Grady Hospital. Some were theorizing that the shooting was linked to the 181 point drop Thursday in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. All-Tech general counsel Linda Lerner said the gunman spoke to the manager and a secretary and then pulled out two guns, one in each hand. He shot the manager and the secretary and then started shooting indiscriminately around the office, Lerner said. The suspect then left and continued shooting around other parts of the building, she said. All-Tech is a New Jersey-based company with 25 branch offices around the country that provide the heavily advertised ATTAIN day-trading software. John Cabrer, who works in an office across the walkway from the building where the shooting occurred, told Atlanta television station WSB-TV that the gunman walked in and said to the occupants of the office, “I hope this doesn't ruin your trading day,” before he opened fire. Cabrer said that when he walked into the office, he saw three people who appeared to be dead and four others who were wounded in that office. “I tried to administer CPR to one of them, but then I realized he was gone,” he said. “So I went to the man who was still conscious on the floor and I called his wife for him.” WENT TO ANOTHER FLOOR He said the shooter had gone to another floor and killed two people there. Dan Guimond, who works in a nearby office and called police after the shooting, said he had seen at least 10 people with wounds after he was told of the attack. Advertisement “A gentleman came into my office panicked,” he said on WSB-TV. “We have seen seven bodies coming out on gurneys with IVs attached and three people walk out who looked like they were injured.” It was unclear where the gunman went after fleeing the brokerage office. Two men evacuated from the building also said they saw blood in the leasing office of the building, on the third floor. Ambulances continued to rush to the scene, with wounded being taken to several local hospitals. Vice President Al Gore phoned Campbell to offer his condolences and offer the support of the FBI. Harvey Houtkin, 50-year-old president of All-Tech Investment Group, said from Montvale that his employees told him Barton hadn't traded since April. “He (the gunman) was a former client.” Houtkin said.>>
