I don't think AOL is as concerned with getting new customers as they are with losing the customer base they have. A lot of people will want to get Internet via cable - including AOL's present customers. After an AOL customer switches to cable and has to pick-up Excite@home - why would they want to keep AOL also?

It's true that AOL has a lot of their own proprietary content to use in enticing their customers to stay with them - yet AOL still has a pretty tough row to hoe here.

I think there is so much content available on the web now and so much more in the future that AOL's proprietary stuff could become viewed as nice but not needed any more by their old customers.
