I think that the most frustrating thing about being a "true believer", is that when nothing happens next January, the "doomers" will be taking credit for discussing the potential disasters so that all the systems were fixed in time.

Karen- >>If the Pollyannas turn out to be right, they can all log on on the first and rub it in. If the true believers are right, they
never get to crow, at least not in this venue.<<
Personally Karen I think the Pollys will be crowing on Jan 1 2000 only to have the domino theory slowly steamroll and become a freight train and run over their smug smiles. I hope like everyone else electric is fairly stable. The US Mail is on nearly equal par with electricity- do not take it for granted.

People in a dreamland seem to think......
1. Either the gov't has a secret fix < almost impossible >
2. The bug is harmless < definately wrong >
3. They refuse to study the interdependancy and fragility of the entire structure on computers and everything working just right.
Get a basic understanding of the domino theories before you brush aside the danger.
4. Remember all the so called compliance happy stories depend on the honor system which Bellsouth for one has said is full of unreliable reports.
5. Thinking "it can't happen" makes it no less possible.
6. That all said panicking does no good- Do not fear all this that you can't control.... just prepare your comfort level- then add some to it to share and hope for the best.
7. Pray I get to load the pickup and head to the homeless shelter about May 2000 when it should be clear if the supply lines are uninterrupted.
Jeff

Karen- If the Pollys are right what will they crow about ? Their not protecting their family because of stubbornness ? fear of friends , neighbors laughing ? afraid of spending a few hundred to couple thousand on life saving insurance ?
If the people who saw the threat and acted are right I don't need to explain that answer.
I only ask who has the most to lose ? The prepared or unprepared ?
Jeff

<Pollyannas..right..log on the first..rub it in>Senario most likely be that only a small number of simultanous disruptions will happen globally on the first...only a small %, maybe 10, will occur on or near that date.

What is more likely, is a continual degradation of many vital systems and links over the next several months, spiking end of Feb, whereby the cascading effects start slowing or shutting down many parts of the infrastructure, dominoing into related industries and other parts of the infrastructure and affecting all of society's systems over time-this is a simplified view.

Mainly, I am indicating there is no yes or no jan 1 finale.

So, I doubt anyone will be able to say I told you so on Jan 1, with any certainty--yet!

However, many of us doomeRealists are prediciting major changes to occur BEFORE Jan 1, which we will be able to sadly shake our heads and say "Guys, too bad you stayed asleep too long!", such as grounding of most/all passenger airlines, Martial law, rationing books for gas, food; disappearance of food from the shelves, if no food rationing program, no more storage foods, generators, water filtration systems, etc., etc., remaining, etc.

But, I certainly will NOT post gloating messages about this myself.
Instead, I will just have empathy for those will not be able to survive next year, or even substantially into next year, with their assets, maybe even their health or well-being or even their lives !

A possible tombstone marker next year, 'HERE RESTS A POLLY WHO STAYED A POLLY ONE DAY TOO LATE'.

No, no, Karen, you have it all wrong <g> .

We true believers will have our Thinkpads and Dells hotwired to our backyard generators (with 50 gallons of gas in the backup tank) and to our rotary phones, crowing to the world like crazy on New Year's Day.

Of course, there may be no one there to hear us, since even though we will bring the full force of our archaic 1982 Internet ftp skills into play, malfunctioning satellites may leave us crowing only to our own hard drives.

But surely there can be no doubt in your mind as to whether we will save our posts so as to post them over and over and over and over again when the crisis has passed? <vbg>
