Carl - thanks for the short statistics - I would have expected there to be a greater number of AMZN shorts at this time. And it makes one ponder whether there isn't room for more shorts to enter.

And thanks for the rule of thumb on shorting amounts - I am only short a few hundred shares in each of the four net stocks I hold short positions in (AMZN, YHOO, CMGI and EBAY) - so hopefully a 10 point gap up won't cause too much pain.

Thanks,
-Eric

The total number of shares is 161MM, of which 63MM are in the float

Per the last updated report, Institutions own 25% of the outstanding(161mm) = 40mm shares, which is roughly 60% of the float(63mm).
Instututions owned >90% of the Amzn float from IPO to 1/99; but not anymore.

So we have the following(current) summary:
a. Institutions own : 40mm shares
b. Tol long shares in the float: 63mm+13.5mm=76.5mm
c. Tol short shares in the float: 13.5mm
My speculation:
The hedge funds, mm traders..etc, own 12mm long shares and 12mm short shares and are playing for daily$$!!
