Inprise Announces Second Quarter 1999 Results

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Inprise Corporation
(Nasdaq: INPR) today announced financial results for the second quarter, which
ended June 30, 1999. For the second quarter of 1999, Inprise Corporation
reported net revenue of $40.2 million, excluding a one-time license fee from
Microsoft Corporation of $100 million. Revenues for the same period a year ago
were $46.5 million. Fully diluted earnings per share were $1.47 for the second
quarter of 1999 compared with $0.03 for the same quarter last year. Excluding
the one time license fee, the Company reported a pre-tax loss from operations
of ($10.5) million for the second quarter of 1999, compared with a pre-tax
operating income of $909 thousand in the second quarter a year ago.

Loss per share for the second quarter of 1999 on a pre-tax operating
basis, excluding the one-time license fee, was ($0.19), compared with fully
diluted pre-tax operating income per share of $0.02 in the same quarter last
year. Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments as of June 30, 1999
were $178.9 million, compared with $81.8 million in the year-ago quarter.

"While revenues were disappointing in the second quarter of 1999, we are
proud of our accomplishments in the quarter, most notably sales of JBuilder,
our rapid application development tool for creating Java, business, database
and distributed applications," said Dale Fuller, interim CEO and president.
"With the release of JBuilder 3 in the second quarter of 1999, our sales of
this product increased over 40 percent compared with a year ago, when we
released JBuilder 2."

Other accomplishments in the second quarter of 1999 included:

* A long-term alliance with Microsoft in which both companies will


cross-license patented technologies;


* Sun Microsystem's selection of Inprise's VisiBroker middleware as its


ORB of choice for its Solstice Enterprise Manager software;


* Several key telecommunications design wins including:


Telcordia, Telenordia, and Deutsche Telekom;


* Release of JdataStore, a 100% Pure Java object/relational database


management system


* A $3 million reduction in operating expense quarter on quarter excluding


the restructuring expenses in first quarter of this year.
