Dear Gregor: The story of the person burying money because of fears of the banking system and financial institutions not being sound and fears of a long-term depression made me think of several things. The first is that people who are considering such things should very seriously consider their personal safety. Unfortunately, there are too many people who are like wolves waiting to devour the innocent and take anything of value -- and cash is the grand prize. To get large amounts of cash one has to go to the bank. That means that at least one (and probably more) individual knows that this person has cash. If one knows then there is an uncomfortable likelihood that others, including wolves, would know. Even if the cash is buried somewhere "safe," if there is such a place, if a wolf knows it is somewhere the owner can be forced to disclose its location -- and given the right technique (like a gun to the head) the owner will disclose. Second, I can't help but think of the parable of the ten talents. Here are the relevant parts: "But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money." Matthew 25:18 "Then the man who had received the one talent came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.' His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents." Matthew 25:24-28. In Christ, Tom
