Still waiting for news of the SF vote... but in the meantime I notice this story from earlier today on Marketwatch:

It's a rehashing of the issues that have been mentioned here for days, but I must admit I'm a bit concerned about this part of it:

While AtHome's customers do see Excite's home page first, they're not blocked from surfing on competing sites, such as those of America Online, argued Milo Medin, ExciteAtHome's chief technology officer. "It's easy; there's no impediment. The real issue is that AOL wants to own the customer from end to end."

What's interesting is that Medin makes no attempt at least in this quotation to draw a distinction between the way AOL draws the user into its home page and the way it's done by ATHM.

So far, as I understand it, @home service uses standard ("open") internet tools. Unlike AOL, it does not require proprietary software that traps the user into an "experience" defined by the service provider.

We've discussed this here before, but quotes like the one above lead me to suspect that ATHM might still be thinking of shooting itself (or its MSO partners) in the feet with an AOL-like gatekeeper system.
