Does this mean Discover will not sell you the stock on margin? I do not have a cash surplus in my account, but I certainly have the required amount of marginable shares.

Ken,

Sorry to hear you didn't get allocated. I did have cash in my account so that may have something to do with it. When I got ARBA I also had cash in the account.

Regards,

Jim

I got my allocation, too. Now we pray, right?

As for unfortunate Ken: "I am "not-allocated" and very unhappy. Jim, I asked Brian about the wording on Discover's site that says you must have either cash or sufficient "non-marginable" stocks in your account to receive IPO shares. Does this mean Discover will not sell you the stock on margin? I do not have a cash surplus in my account, but I certainly have the required amount of marginable shares."

I suspect it's much more likely that you just weren't fast enough, or something like that. Of course IPO stock is not itself marginable, but if you had other marginable shares, that should be sufficient for Discover. But it's essentially impossible to figure out what scheme they use to dole out their goodies....

I didn't get any Drugstore, or any Ariba either. So it goes. It must be at least somewhat random. I did get 100 shares of Ask Jeeves, which gave a moderately decent answer to the question "Will I make money on the Ask Jeeves IPO?"

Ken,

I have an account with Discover, and I got the same message as you - "not-allocated". However, I did get ARBA and ASKJ. In addition, I do have much more than enough fund to cover the purchase of CMDX, if the shares were to be allocated to me. I'm puzzled why we weren't allocated. One thought I had in mind was that maybe CMDX wasn't allocated to me because I had sold ARBA on the 31st day instead of holding it.

If you don't mind, please share with us any information that you might feel as relevant on why you weren't allocated. Please, anyone else reading this message, likewise, share with us your thoughts. Hopefully, with the right information we can receive an allocation all the time.
