People in much of the rural south or western US don't live in the broad "consumer" economy mcuh of the urban US "enjoys". Many garden, can & dry a decent % of their own food, hunt, fish, and simply get by with less. My brother provides around 85% of his own energy in relation to amount used by the US. In many Colorado middle class homes if we get lucky on a weekend drive & come upon a just "road killed" deer, they guy sits the claim and starts cleaning while wife goes and calls the law for a "road kill claim form". Just read that 25% of people are driving with-out insurance in most rural areas. thankfully in most rural areas in part due to the poor commodity prices real estate prices remain in reach for rent or purchase.
