I agree. No other auction site comes even close.

However, will this dominant leadership position be true 1 year from now? What about 5 years from now? Because eBay is being aggressively targeted by competitors, I think it's unlikely.

Good point. Makes it tough for the brokerage firms to turn a profit. But this is starting to happen in the auction space, too. Some of the same items listed at eBay can now be found at Amazon.com.

There may not be anything special about E*Trade... unless E*Trade is successful at turning into a full financial transaction portal (trading, banking, insurance...) in a differentiated way.
