I liked Heinlein when I was about 10-12, but his writing really is painfully bad. Actually, it's so bad it's quite good. There is a wonderful essay by George Orwell, the title of which is not on the tip of my tongue but is something like "good bad books." His later stuff, I agree, went way off the edge. Time Enough for Love is just trash. But some of his early writing -- Starship Troopers, Farmer in the Sky, The Man Who Sold The Moon, etc. was actually quite good.
