I find it quite interesting that there is such a divergence of opinions with regards to internet banking. I seem to recall the same debates about 18-24 months ago with regards to e-commerce. Many, many "investors" shrugged it off, suggesting that it will never catch on. It's grown from under $3 billion in '97 to $12 billion in '99. It's expected to exceed $40 billion (the conservative estimates) by 2002. I think it's catching on, don't you?

What in the world suggests that the banking industry is any less prone to this evolution? (revolution?) The success and growth of ATMs during the 90s is proof-positive that internet banking will catch on. Thanks to technology, customers don't need to walk into a bank anymore because banking is a service as much as it is a product. Banks are realizing that the internet will grow into their central medium and they must adapt quickly. Yes, many banks have had operational websites for a while now, and many others are joining the fray. However, the leaders will be the banks that get clever about this whole technology evolution.

Revolutionary product ideas (like online CD auctions) and a creative presentation (like Flash technology) will help differentiate a bank like USABanc.com. They also look to be the first to offer an "all-in-one" package, with their website not only serving as a portal to the internet, but also combining all financial products and services under one roof (and leading to one bottom line.)These are all things that will give them a competitive advantage... and that's the beauty of doing business. Create a competitive advantage and VOILA! - you are a leader.

Like they say... This is one idea whose time has come.
