Besides, are you aware that Partridge is out of print -- at least in this country? Not just his original "Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English," but the "Concise Dictionary" (edited by Paul Beale), and the "Shorter Slang Dictionary"? Anyone who might have gone online to Amazon or Barnes and Noble hoping to buy a Partridge would have come a cropper. Check it out:

There <is> an abridged and denatured Partridge available. It is entitled "The Shorter Slang Dictionary (The Partridge Collection)". Partridge, although dead, is listed as one of the editors; Paul Beale is the other editor, and one Rosalind Fergusson is the "compiler." From the publisher's blurb:

This new collection brings together some 5,000 contemporary slang expressions with origins in all parts of the world and spanning seven centuries....Just before his death, he [Partridge] handed over his material to Paul Beale, who was responsible for adding some 5,000 modern expressions to the latest edition. The entries for the Shorter Slang Dictionary have been taken from A Concise Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, with new definitions compiled by Rosalind Fergusson, a freelance lexicographer..

(Strange: Beale adds 5,000 new entries, but the dictionary still has only 5,000 entries in all??!!)

I have no idea how good/useful this dictionary is. I do remember reading a review. The reviewer did admit that slang develops -- and dates -- very fast, so that it really was necessary to "update" Partridge. At the same time, he complained that not very much was left of Partridge (the same complaint people have made about the 3rd edition of Fowler's Modern English Usage).

P.S. One final remark, to all. None of the "directories" I produce pretend to finality or absolute inclusiveness. Additional suggestions/additions have been solicited. So please pass them along if you have them. Just don't jump on me for not including them in the "first draft." I have compiled various bibliographical lists and "anthologies" only because I want to share what I think is useful information with you. If I'm wasting my time, please tell me so. If you don"t think I'm wasting my time, a "thank you" would be appreciated. :-)
