Denmark, EU Seen Lagging on Genetic Research Over Food Row

Danish and European Union companies will fall behind their
non-European counterparts on genetic research, if the EU doesn't
abandon its plans to block approval of genetically modified crops
until stricter safety standards are in place, Danish newspaper
Borsen reported, citing Frederik Lunden, chief executive at
Monsanto Danmark, the Danish subsidiary of Monsanto Co., the
world's second-largest maker of crop protection products such as
herbicides. When the EU opens up to these products again in a few
years, ''European companies will have a lot to catch up,'' said
Lunden. Monsanto, Denmark's Danisco A/S and DLF Trifolium AS
don't intend to withdraw their joint application to the European
Union to press ahead with genetically modified sugar beet, as
requested by the Danish government, Lunden said.
