MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 27, 1999--DiviCom Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of C-Cube Microsystems (Nasdaq:CUBE) and the leading provider of open solutions for digital television, today announced that it has been selected by WHTV Broadcasting of Puerto Rico to supply the first multi-channel/multi-point distribution system (MMDS) digital head-end on the island.

The DiviCom open solutions-based MPEG-2 encoding system will enable WHTV to convert quickly from an analog based system to a digital system. The ability to rapidly transition to digital television will give the broadcaster a competitive edge in delivering advanced services to cable customers. DiviCom is providing its MediaView line of MPEG-2 encoders as well as complete system integration services. DiviCom's partners in the WHTV system are Nagra, which will supply the conditional access system, and Zenith for the set-top boxes.

WHTV Broadcasting is the first wireless cable operator in Puerto Rico to convert to digital. DiviCom's complete head-end subsystem will include MediaView encoders, MediaNode(TM) MN20 Remultiplexer, and the Thesys Integrated Network Management Solution. WHTV is using the DiviCom MediaView encoders to triple the number of their channels from about 25 analog channels to approximately 75 digital, and to increase the video and audio quality of its broadcasts.

"We selected DiviCom for its superb video and audio quality, superior technological integration and excellent support, but most of all for their flexible solution," said Joe Sala, general manager. "We want to offer new levels of service to our subscribers, to expand the number of channels, and be prepared for increased competition no matter what may happen."

"WHTV is committed to leading in the delivery of digital television service," said Tom Lookabaugh, president of DiviCom. "DiviCom open solutions are designed to provide the capability needed for today with the ability to adapt to rapidly changing market requirements."

"We wanted an open systems approach this time around," Sala said. "Our selection process ranked interoperability and flexibility as key features. An open systems-based solution provides us with the ability to choose the best in upgrades and new features. In addition, expandability isn't limited. We can now move into new markets whenever and wherever they evolve. Vendors like DiviCom play a key role in providing interoperable solutions with flexibility and growth in mind."
