Thanks for the complete explanation of the evolution of the VW40 specification. VW40 is now added to all of my lists of acronyms for the various flavors of 3G.

You might be interested in this link to a pretty good article called "Any Time, Any Place, Any Where" which discusses the challenges facing mobile handset vendors that are planning multimode products for the 3G market. It is current enough to include SDMA (Space Division Multiple Access)and goes on to state that "the interface likely to be most popular, CDMA, will require three modes, meaning it becomes at least two different standards":
