"During the second quarter of 1999, we set a bookings record of $10.4 million, up 17% from the previous record of $8.9 million, and up 37% from the second quarter of 1998.

Our balance sheet has improved, with inventories reduced by almost US$ 1.8 million over the first quarterof 1999. The bottom line is now benefiting from operating expense reductions we announced last November with overall operating expenses down 18% from the second quarter of 1998. While our strengthening backlog and improved financial performance reflects the beginning of arecovery in the high-end DSP systems market and our participation in that recovery, we expect market conditions to remain challenging for the balance of the year," said Mr. Jinks

Keep expectations low and then surprise on the upside? Some apparent contradictions?

Nord,...Apart from the stocks that I show recent public posts to I own Intel (I worked for them) Microsoft, Gateway Computer, Softbank, Coastal Caribbean Oil and Canada Southern Petroleum and a host of others. I'm an enginer (retired, mechanical) and I've worked for many small and large Companies in the high tech fields. If you are gathering information to try to discredit or attack me, I'll feel sorry about that.

I am truly trying to understand the Spectrum slide in the marketplace from $14+ to under $2 over the last four years. It does no good to pretend that it didn't happen. Over the years there have been very few comments on Spectrum that outline the reasons for such performance. To be credible, I think the Board needs some reasonable balance.

You haven't commented on Hot Haus, but I think that it is clear that something happened in 1994 that had a tremendous impact on the future (from that point) of SSPI. Large Companies have spin offs all the time, but when a small company like Spectrum loses three people who create a $280 million company over five years one has to wonder how that happened. Those guys left Spectrum with a clear plan that had to include making money pretty quickly. I'll bet that they developed their initial ideas while they were still at Spectrum. Did they keep the ideas secret or did management reject the idea? The answers to these questions strike to the heart of management's job.

I am not short SSPI stock as I think you suspect. I still have a small position, and it doesn't warrant spending as much time as I have spent lately. Part of it is an attempt to get to the heart of Spectrum's problems from an academic point of view (other than the usual small company difficulties). At least Spectrum doesn't just have one major customer. That's a formula for disaster. They are in the position of being dependent on one major large company, TI. That could be a problem, but it appears that Spectrum is trying to fix that.

Anyway, I hope that the personal attacks diminish. I only respond when I am attacked and the ladies seem to view any softening as a sign of weakness or something <G>. I have been pretty restrained in my responses so far <G>. You can tell them that I've been told that I intimidate lawyers in open court so we can play that game, but to no purpose on this Board.
