John,

Yes, ali stood for principle in the face of great adversity and may have been the most beloved athlete on the planet at one time(if not now). Reggie stood for Reggie and maybe the Yankees at one time, but little else. however he was the most magneteic athlete around for quite awhile, and his popularity was tremendous. He really was not that different than Deon. There are others we can throw in there too.

Sugar Ray Leonard was a great boxer and hugely popular. He was also a coke addict, a showboat and not the greatest guy. Roberto Duran was a contemporary who probably had a better career but was villified(even before the "no mas" incident). There are many others.

The whole point I was trying to make is that some people, by the nature of their personality, seem to engender very strong positive or negative emotion that go beyond whatever effect their actions have.

It happens in all professions and walks of life to some degree. In my opinion, Hillary and Bill both have that effect on people.
