U S West, Montana Power In Digital Pact

DENVER (Reuters) - Local telephone company U S West Inc. said Tuesday it and the telecommunications unit of Montana Power Co.
(NYSE:MTP - news) had entered a digital wireless service agreement.

The joint venture between U S West Wireless and Montana Power's Touch America unit is designed to provide one-number digital wireless
service in a seven-state region from the Pacific Northwest to the Upper Midwest.

The companies foresee an initial three-year investment totaling about $88 million.

The venture affects nearly 2.5 million customers. It expands the reach and service area of U S West's Advanced PCS (personal communications services) customers.

The joint venture will let customers in smaller and mid-sized communities use the same number for their wireless phones as they use for their home or office.

The service is available in such U S West markets as Denver; Seattle; Portland, Ore.; Minneapolis; and Phoenix.

The PCS expansion will initially include 22 communities in Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, and Wyoming.

Construction is expected to be completed by 2002.

U S West has agreed to be bought by Qwest Communications International Inc. in a $36 billion deal.
