Nuance and Oracle Help Bring Multi-Channel Access to Application Service Providers
Industry Leaders Demonstrate Integrated Solution for Rapid Deployment of Over-the-Phone Speech and Web Applications at Oracle's(R) e-business Platform Day
MENLO PARK, Calif., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Nuance today announced that Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL - news) demonstrated Nuance's integrated voice and Web-based access to a range of hosted applications for personal information management at Oracle's e-business Platform day event held today in Redwood Shores, Calif. At e-business Platform day, Oracle exhibited how with Nuance technology, Application Service Providers (ASPs) can host easy-to-use and manage V-Commerce (voice-enabled e-commerce) applications that can be accessed by a variety of devices and interfaces.

In the past year, companies have increasingly turned to ASPs to host and manage critical Web-based applications. ASPs provide a cost-effective and reliable environment without many of the development or deployment headaches associated with customer premise based applications. The combination of the Oracle® Internet Platform, the industry's first complete Internet platform for developing, deploying and managing Web-based applications, and Nuance 6, a highly accurate and scaleable natural language speech recognition server, makes it easy for ASPs to extend access to these applications to the more than one billion telephone users.

During today's demonstration, the two companies showed how a mobile employee can access and update address books and directories, place calls and send and receive e-mail and voice mail through a variety of devices including a Palm Pilot, web browser and telephone -- without using a telephone keypad or speaking with a human assistant. Both speech and Web interfaces use the same back-end databases and application servers, so the cost for an ASP to add a speech interface to their existing infrastructure is very low. ASPs benefit from increased system usage and their customers benefit by offering their own end users, partners and employees improved service, sales and productivity.

''Oracle provides a complete, high-quality platform for voice-enabling Web-based applications,'' said Steve Ehrlich, vice president of marketing for Nuance Communications. ''The combination of this platform with Nuance's natural language speech technology provides an easy-to- implement solution for the next-generation network applications. Thin-client e-commerce, customer relationship management and unified messaging systems are now conveniently accessible by everyone with a telephone, Web browser or networked device.''

''The Internet has changed everything -- our goal is to make hosted applications built on the Oracle Internet Platform accessible to every individual regardless of their location or choice of device,'' said Mark Jarvis, senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing at Oracle Corp. ''Nuance's impressive speech technology voice enables the data held within the Oracle Internet Platform making it instantly accessible to anyone who can use a phone.''

The Oracle Internet Platform includes more than a dozen technologies and services including the database, application server, directory server, development tools and systems management services. It makes it easy for ASPs to quickly develop and deploy scaleable, reliable and secure Web-based applications. Nuance makes use of several of these technologies in the implementation of speech applications. For example, Nuance's JavaBeans-based SpeechObjects(TM), public source reusable speech components, enable developers to easily build sophisticated speech applications on the Oracle Internet Platform using the Oracle JDeveloper(TM) integrated development environment (IDE).

Developers can obtain access to Nuance's SpeechObjects and speech engine through the Nuance Developer Network(TM) at nuance.com.
