Ramsey Su, You might want to consider doing some research on
BlueTooth - which will be one way (if not the best way ) to
enable these devices to communicate together.

I doubt that the average person will want to carry more that a
lap top and a cell phone. Nor would they want to spend much
time talking into their laptop, or typing on their cell phone.

BlueTooth would allow one to use the phone as a means of connecting
to an ISP, an IP network, or a nearby cellular transceiver- while
maintaining continuous radio contact with his/her laptop via the
BlueTooth radio frequency interface.

On a smaller scale, a number of people are currently participating
in various Silicon Investor threads with a radio-modem device
made by a company called Metricom (MCOM).

You might want to visit that thread.
Actually, you might say that the future is already here.

Best Regards,
Mardy.

<<For it to be a killer app, it has to have broader use than just getting quotes.>>

Let's expand. You are still at the bocci match on an island drinking iced tea. Through your converged device, you check the value of your portfolio, since you have been notified (beeped) that there is news on one of your companies. You initiate a trade transaction through your online broker through your device. The funds are automatically moved from your bank account to your brokerage account. You catch headline news on the tv integrated into your device. You receive back the trade confirmation. Your portfolio is updated. You access the email that has come into your office and choose to listen to it rather than read it. You respond to some of it through the device; some you handle via phone. You check the temp at the beach house and turn on the A/C through the device. You get in your Lexus SUV, slip the device into its cradle, and access traffic updates and route information for when the ferry hits the mainland. On the ferry, you are making flight and accommodation reservations for next week, as you review the calendar synch'ed with your office. Your kids call and ask if they can use the paraglider. You say it's OK, and they say they'll send you some streaming video from the air. You send an email to a friend in China; the device converts your English input to Manadarin (do I have that right?) You watch the movie Matrix on the device as you head to the mainland; RTQ's for your portfolio streaming across the bottom of the screen. (Whew! Sounds like a busy way to spend an hour!)

I know you're looking for hardware; I'll have to dig further. My instinct tells me that Coms might be part of this in a significant way. And Qcom.

Ramsey,

<< Is anyone working on any futuristic concept devices for 3G? >>

There is a rather new thread on SI (started July 12) that attempts to pursue this topic:

"Access Anywhere, Anytime. Cell Phones/PDA's join the Net"

127.0.0.1:3456/SI/~wsapi/investor/Subject-29380

Only 90 posts so far but a promising thread none the less.

We are, I think talking more than hardware (incorporation of miniature display technology from companies like Kopin) but also the enabling specifications like WAP 1.1, OS (EPOC & Windows CE), languages (WAP-XML, XHTML et al) & microbrowsers. There is an interesting article (dated June 1 but recently posted) on this subject at:
