Actually, Michael, the exchange between CH and I began with this post by CH in response to something I posted to Joan:

>>>>>Well, yes, certain parts of D.C. are beautiful and cosmopolitan. But I wouldn't say the city is. I don't think that any city which has the extent of substandard housing, the horrendeous school district, the crime rate, etc. of Washington can be considered a world-class city. For those who live outside the city and only visit it for its good points (which you do, and which I did for four years in Annapolis and three in Sandy Spring) it good parts are indeed lovely and impressive. But as a city, an organic entity which should serve ALL its citizens, it is a total failure. No little thanks to Congress.<<<<<

"No little thanks to Congress" means Congress is partly to blame.

"The substandard housing, the horrendous school district, the crime rate" casts blame, in part, on the D.C. government, which runs the housing department, the school district, and the police, as you are no doubt aware.

I gather that you haven't been keeping up with the argument, or you'd know that I live in Northern Virginia, outside the Beltway, and thus could not be part of the DC government, you have to live in DC to work for the DC government.

And the whole thing actually started weeks ago, when Christine responded to a post by Joan, in which Joan was extolling the virtues of the area, by remarking on how dangerous it is.

Funny, but the people who have actually lived here, Joan, Neocon, Lather, and myself, are in agreement, and it's only the people who live elsewhere that disagree.
