Tellabs Completes Acquisition of Alcatel's DSC Communications Businesses in Europe

LISLE, Ill., July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Tellabs (TLAB) announced today that it has completed the acquisition of Alcatel's DSC Communications businesses in Europe, a move that extends Tellabs' global presence and heightens its ability to meet the growing demand for fiber transmission networks worldwide.

"This acquisition enhances our ability to deliver high-speed transport solutions to our global customers," said Brian J. Jackman, president of Global Systems and Technology at Tellabs.

DSC Communications, which is headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, is a leading provider of managed, high-speed transport solutions based on Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) technology. The acquisition also covers business operations in Drogheda, Ireland; sales and support offices in England, India and Poland; and an interest in FIBCOM India Ltd., a joint venture with Indian Telephone Industries Ltd. in India.

"By combining our global reach and complementary technologies, we will be able to maximize our ability to develop and deliver SDH and optical transport solutions," said Peter Viereck, executive vice president and chief operating officer of DSC Europe, who will lead the new Tellabs Denmark.

Under terms of the acquisition, originally announced on May 26, Tellabs paid approximately $110 million in cash for the European businesses.

International Telecom Equipment Manufacturer Recognizes Growth in China Telecommunications Industry

Singapore – Tellabs, one of the world's leading telecom equipment
manufacturers, expanded its operations in China today, with the opening of its office in Shanghai, responsible for the eastern region of China.

The office opening strengthens Tellabs' presence in this highly
competitive market, which has attracted many well-known international
companies. Tellabs opened its first office in China in Beijing in 1994
and also has an office in Hong Kong.

Tellabs has local manufacturing capabilities for its echo cancellers
through its partnership with Eastcom. The transfer of U.S. technology to China is in line with the policy of the Chinese government.

The Shanghai office is managed by branch manager Patrick Qu.
