Will,

Maybe I would sum it up that the PDA in itself is a continuous innovation if its innerds aren't too disruptive. Using that logic, the PDAs using Windows CE are continuous by virtue of the fact that it can run Windows-based apps (not entirely but you get my point.) The PDAs using other operating systems are more discontinuous because various apps have to be written for the discontinuous OS.

If I've got that right, the focus should be on the value chain for a better idea of who will win the Pilot/CE battle. If enough robust Java apps are written for the Pilot, the Pilot's initial lead in the market might be successful in holding off the CE onslaught.

Ultimately, I've got a feeling that the operating system that becomes dominant in the set-top box market will greatly influence the PDA market. I think we're going to be backing up our PDAs in set-top boxes and also getting data from them. We'll probably be sending data to them from our PDAs too. But all of that's a long way off.
