<You choose the date..the dark ages?>Seriously, John, not far back enough, and here is why:

1. they had a division of labor and speciailization. A breakdown of modern society must result in a total disruption of any such division, for a long, long time, and only localized when it returns..

2. Comparatively miniscule population.

3. Very small % looters, arsonists compared to what this socieity habors now, but espically when no one has food or water or heat.

4. They at least had some herbal type medicines. Next year virtually no one will have ANY medications of any type.

5. They had horses for travel. No one will have any, except for inadequate pedal power.

6. Most of them lived near streams or other water holes. Few of us do now, and most of current ones are at least somewhat polluted.

7. They could trap and hunt for food. Almost none of us have that option.

8. They lived basic lives, filled with virtually no change. Compare that with a meltdown of society.

9. They only had to go short distances to buy foodstuffs or for ingredients to make themselves. Forget that option next year.

10. They had a sense and pride and suppportiveness in communities- next year to the contrary, it will be the law of the jungle for the vast majority.

11. They had basic blacksmithing, tooling, dyemaking, weaving, artisian works, silversmithing, casting, etc., all lost skills to almost everyone today.

12. They knew how to safely use candles, without starting fires.

13. They had fireplace stoves to cook.

14. They had basic clothswashing faciliies.

15. They could make their own soap, clothes, etc, no one today does.

16. They could easily acquire materials for making clothes- not true next year.

17. They could easily acquire milk.

18. They had nearby family for support- seldom true today.

19. Many had their own livestock for food- almost no one does today.

20. They had no danger of chemical plant explosions, nuk meltdowns, WMD terrorism, gang and widespread looting, arson, etc.

That's just for starters!
