I saw the latter part of this episode on TV. The reason given by the narrator is the erotic sculptures on the temples in Kajuraho. That these were discovered by a British explorer, whose victorian sensibilities were offended, and hence the temples were not given much publicity. It was also added that the southern temple architectures with their emphasis on large numbers of idols did not go well with western sensibilities as opposed to the the northern Mugal architecture, which corresponded more to what western ideas of what grand architecture is.

Not at all convincing. Kajuraho is not even in the south.

The episode itself, however, was excellent.
