Infonetics Research Forecasts CLEC NSP Expenditures to Reach $4.5 Billion by 2003

Growth Fueled by Aggressive VPN and DSL Service Deployments

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 17, 1999--Infonetics Research, Inc. today announced the release of its latest strategic market research study, ''The CLEC NSP Opportunity 1999.''

In it we forecast that CLEC NSPs will spend more than $4.5 billion on data network equipment in 2003.

We estimate that there are now 1,500 distinct companies registered as CLECs in the US, up from about 1,100 a year ago, and the numbers continue to rise. IXCs, non-telecom utilities, Local/Regional ISPs, CAPs -- and any other company with enough nerve to take on incumbent carriers -- are seizing the enormous opportunity created by the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which opened up the local exchange carrier market nationwide.

''CLECs are planning to offer several hot new services in the next 12 months: All of our respondents plan DSL and a majority plan VPNs and VoDSL services,'' said Michael Howard, Principal Analyst and Founder of Infonetics Research.

''DSL expenditures are 51% of CLECs' CPE expenditures this year, rising to 57% in 2000, which demonstrates why equipment manufacturers should ensure that CLECs are part of their distribution channel strategy for CPE that supports DSL, VPNs, and VoDSL,'' he added.

The CLEC NSP Opportunity 1999 is a 244-page demand-side research study featuring 138 exhibits and a broad range of topics, including:

-- 5-year forecast (1999-2003) of US expenditures for access
equipment, WAN equipment, LAN equipment, management hardware and
software, and CPE
-- Deployment plans for DSL and VoDSL services
-- Types of VPN services offered and VPN expenditures
-- CLEC network and service growth plans
-- Network architectures for COs, POPs, and data centers, including
technology type, speed, and number of connections
-- LAN and Web server profile: server growth, operating systems, and
expenditures
-- Data service connections like frame relay, leased line, and ATM
-- The purchase process
