The statistics are in, confirming DVD's unprecedented growth, according to CEMA. For the week ending July 16, 1999 DVD player sales are 31,122, up 235.2 percent from 1998's total of 9,284. Projection televisions for the same week were level with 1998's total of 16,311.

Month-to-date sales for DVD players have jumped dramatically to 73,276 units sold, up from 15,614 units sold in 1998, a 369.3 percent increase. By contrast, projection television month-to-date sales have decreased to 25,104 down from 28,169 in 1998, a ( -10.9) percent decrease.

Year-to-date sales for DVD players have surpassed the million mark reaching 1,359,756 a 365.7 percent increase over 1998's total of 291,951, while projection television year-to-date sales reached only 495,812, a mere 13.9 percent increase over 1998's total of 435,385.
