Al, you are right, nevertheless, when a company is restructuring itself to meet the next generation of technological needs it has to allot resources for infrastructure and R&D, in lieu of earnings. Hence, what we have pertaining to earnings growth is not impressive, but the prudent investor looks deeper than the front veneer of a company and sees what is brewing from within. It is here deep in its' kernel where it will manifest its true worth. It should be acknowledged under these circumstances, meeting expectations is exceptional.

Not true at all....

In today's market, one cent above analyst expectations is a sure negative indicator

Look at Cisco. They beat earnings by a penny every single qtr. The stock roars on...

3Com is a different case. For the next 6 months it will rise on takeover or restructuring news. Unlikely to go anywhere based on fundamentals unless they kept some revenue and profits in the bag from last qtr.
