If I may make a few comments on your assumptions and pose a question of my own.

you say:

1) Laptops have fast, powerful, processors compatible with hundreds of thousands of applications.

2) They make web use easy and satisfying because web pages are written to be viewed on them. Translators and converters will be cludgy and rewriting may work for a select minority of sites (stock quotes) but only for a tiny minority.

First, have you seen the number, quality, and breadth of applications available for the palm? Most of those applications will be usable on the PDQ. The only limitation is that it has a different screen size so anything that depends on screen size won't work.

Second, what makes you think that you have to rewrite a web site for something like a PDQ? Have you ever seen one? My impression is that they have full HTML capability (minus graphics).

Finally, Have you ever thought of buying something like the PDQ and using that as your "on the run" device and when you have the time and inclination you can plug its RS232 port into your computer and use it as a modem? in this way you have the flexiblity of using the phone during the day to go to meetings and take action items. You may even keep up on email, maybe you can even pass the time in a boring meeting playing Frogger, Galaxian, Space Invaders, or looking up some relevant web site for info. Then at night you can go to the net and read Maurices latest rant.

This post was not meant to be snotty or condescending but I think that the future is in having a mix of appliances. People don't want to have to carry around a laptop all of the time to take their calls on. But something of a compromise with many of the most used capabilities(like email and a basic browser) that allows you to plug it into a computer to use like a modem is PERFECT.
