Are you referring to stocks in general?

It's basically just a companies tangible assets minus liabilities
divided by the number of shares. I think it can get a little
more complicated taking into account certain long term
liabilities or stuff like "goodwill", but this is the basic
idea.

FWIW, a really excellent site to bookmark on investment questions
