Dell sells consumers 'beyond the box'
Margaret Kane, ZDNet

Dell Computer Corp.'s decision to add Internet services to its package of consumer offerings is yet another sign that PC companies are hoping to extend their relationship with buyers beyond the box.
While services have long been a key factor in distinguishing players in the enterprise computing world, the same has not been true in the consumer market.

But today, companies are realizing that not only do outside-the-box services help them sell their PC products, they can offer additional and lucrative revenue streams.

Hardware becoming marginalized
"Without a doubt the guys that just sell hardware going forward will be marginalized. It's important to be a part of the whole Internet hardware connection," said Matt Sargent, analyst at InfoBeads. "What you're seeing from Gateway and Dell is that they're keeping it in the family ... rather then just parsing it off and letting them run with it. With any additional business derived, they benefit."

Dell's (Nasdaq:DELL - news) offering -- which includes a year of Internet service, online backup, CD-recording and copying software and home page creation -- is designed to follow users' usage patterns, officials said today.

"What we're seeing is PCs moving from being a standalone device to PCs being a connected device," said Klee Kleber, director of marketing for Dell's consumer business. "(It involves) integrating elements across a range of offerings: PCs, peripherals, access and even some content."
