Great stuff elmatador! It throws open the whole problem of entrenched public network operators business model. For years and years they have billed on minutes of usage for us poor plebs at home. The whole system is being challenged by the Internet and new players from new CLECs to next gen telcos (ISP even). From timed minutes to packets or subscription...it just very hard to teach old dogs new tricks. However, there has been a realisation by many of the old PNOs. The AXE switch does indeed support IP, as does ATM on the backbone through ATM data-packets.

The Ericy acquisitions also mean they have products for the edge, such as the Tigris routers that is meant to handle PSTN IP traffic from the home (but as far as I can recall only a few minor operators are using it at the moment). Operators will HAVE to upgrade at some point because data is clogging up the networks now.

Like to see how ADSL (or whatever xDSL) will change the attitude (let's see what BT does over here).

Elmatador...many thanks for the informative posts now that we have lit your fire (knowing you area of interest/expertise)! I am sure even Telefonica will surprise a few people soon...
