MTI Technology Storage Servers Support Iridium Worldwide Operations

PR Newswire - July 28, 1999 10:45

MTI Products Manage Billing Information For World's First Global Satellite-Based Communications
Company

ANAHEIM, Calif., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- MTI Technology Corp. (Nasdaq: MTIC), a leading
provider of comprehensive storage solutions, announced that Iridium LLC (Nasdaq: IRID) has
selected MTI's enterprise RAID storage systems and tape libraries to manage its customer billing
applications worldwide. MTI also will supply Iridium with storage management software to manage
its data-intensive applications.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., Iridium is the world's first provider of satellite-based, global
phone and paging services. Using a network of 66 low earth-orbiting satellites and existing terrestrial
cellular systems, Iridium enables customers to communicate virtually anywhere in the world using a
single, hand-held satellite phone, pager and phone number.

"Iridium chose MTI because the company provided a reliable and flexible architecture for managing
information storage across the Iridium enterprise," said Mark Scrimshire, Iridium's director of
corporate information services. "MTI storage components are integrated into the development and
delivery of the company's information-intensive customer management applications. MTI's storage
solutions support our efforts in providing customers with the highest level of service."

As part of the storage systems installation, MTI will provide Iridium with Gladiator storage servers,
several Infinity digital linear tape libraries and data management software from Legato. The products
give the company a comprehensive storage solution that provides high-capacity, high-performance
and near-instantaneous access to its mission-critical billing applications.

Using data management software enables Iridium's administrative staff to monitor, control and
manage data libraries throughout the networked environment from anywhere in the enterprise. MTI's
storage solutions will support more than 160 of Iridium's Sun-based E-4000 and E-5000 servers
operating Sybase and Oracle databases. The combination of MTI storage arrays and Sun servers will
bring the company's total storage capacity to nearly 6 terabytes.

"Global communications companies such as Iridium depend on storage to manage and archive critical
information in highly available wide area networks," said Kevin J. Liebl, MTI's vice president of
marketing. "As a leading provider of fault-tolerant storage solutions, MTI gives customers the reliable
storage tools they need to accommodate massive repositories of data and the flexibility to expand to
meet continued business growth and global expansion. We are pleased to be able to support
Iridium's efforts with our enterprise storage products and services."

Iridium LLC became the world's first global satellite phone and paging company on Nov. 1, 1998. Its
network of 66 low earth-orbiting satellites, combined with existing terrestrial cellular systems, enables
customers to communicate around the globe. For more information visit the company's World Wide

AirTouch Launches All-Digital Mobile Internet Service

Net Access is Fastest Wireless Data Service Offered by a Major U.S.
Cellular Carrier - and Includes a Direct Connection to the Internet

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- AirTouch Cellular today launched Net Access, an all-digital service that lets
travelers and mobile workers cut the tether to their desktops and access the Internet, online services or corporate networks
while on the go.

Armed with a laptop computer and a data-ready AirTouch digital phone, customers in Michigan, Salt Lake City and Seattle
can now enjoy the freedom and convenience of Net Access, the fastest and most convenient wireless information service
offered by a major U.S. cellular carrier. AirTouch plans to extend the service across most of its footprint by the first quarter of
next year.

Users at airports, client sites or even the beach can now send and receive e-mail, files and faxes; access their company's
intranet; update contacts and schedules; and use the Internet to check a customer's Web site, monitor news and stock prices
and review airline schedules -- all without having to plug into a telephone line.

Net Access is the first of several planned Mobile Internet offerings from AirTouch. Products coming soon will include wireless
portal services that work with handheld smart phones and personal digital assistants to facilitate a variety of mobile messaging,
information and e-commerce services.

''In today's fast-paced world, Net Access will help you stay in touch, manage information more productively and balance
your life,'' said Jack Roettenberger, vice president of AirTouch's Michigan region. ''It promises to be as revolutionary for
personal information access and management as cellular was for voice communications.''

Unlike previous wireless data access services, Net Access doesn't require an expensive wireless modem. It works with new
data-ready digital phones such as the sleek, lightweight and inexpensive Qualcomm 860 Thin Phone, which AirTouch is the
first cellular carrier to offer. (Compatible handsets from other vendors will be available later this year.) The phone, connected
to your laptop with a simple serial cable (available from AirTouch), is all you need -- the service requires no other hardware
or special software.

Net Access provides a speedier and much more reliable connection than older analog-based wireless services. The service
offers the fastest data throughput commercially available from any major U.S. cellular or PCS carrier and is more than
adequate for text-based applications such as e-mail or most Web browsing.

In addition, Net Access connects you directly to the Internet exceptionally fast -- typically in less than 10 seconds, according
to our tests, compared to as much as 30 seconds for dial-up access from your desktop. The service is priced for now at the
same airtime rates as voice communications. While connected to Net Access, customers can use the minutes they already
have in their monthly bundle.

AirTouch serves 9 million U.S. cellular and PCS customers on a proportionate basis. Its ventures operate in 25 states and 22
of the top 30 U.S. markets, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix, San Diego,
San Francisco and Seattle. AirTouch is part of Vodafone AirTouch Plc, the world's largest wireless communications firm,
based in the United Kingdom. It has mobile operations in 24 countries on five continents, with more than 31 million
proportionate customers. For more information, visit the AirTouch web site at www.airtouch.com .
(Net Access is available throughout Michigan where AirTouch service is available.)
