Those who point out "rich" people as the only potential market in developing countries are making the same mistake as those pointing out ubiquitous cellular coverage in the US as a deterrent to buying a G* phone.

We take reliable, always-on telephone communication with pretty much anyone we want to speak with for granted. What price can you put on your ability to speak with family members on their birthdays? Or coordinate travel arrangements to a distant city? How about the ability of your doctor to quickly speak with resources beyond the immediate vicinity?

We take cheap basic phone service for granted, just like we take cell service. If basic telephony were a scarce resource, how much would you be willing to pay to ensure communication? IMHO, there are many in LDCs who would prioritize this connectivity very highly, were it to become available, whether they are "rich" or not.

Last I read there is a year-and-a-half wait for fixed line service in Brazil.

IMHO, as always
