Good question. Microsoft is requiring a new download every time they add a new hack. I don't see how AOL could avoid doing the same.

IMHO:

Microsoft is changing their client to attempt to interface with AOL's servers. AOL is changing server-side code. Therefore no download would be necessary. Also, if AOL required a download to block Microsoft it wouldn't be much of a block, would it?
