I am criticized for saying that Nortel is the leader in optical networking. Here is an article in which the CEO of Nexabit says the battle for leadership in the core of the network is only betwen Lucent and Cisco. The CEO of Nexabit does not consider Nortel to be a competitor. He says their only competition is Cisco. If the CEO of Nexabit is entitled to his opinion, I am certainly entitled to express mine.

Lucent actually has the leadership position. There are three elements of the core: optical, ATM switching and Internet protocol (or IP)routing. Lucent has leadership position in market size and technology of the optical element and ATM (or anynchronous transfer mode).
Cisco clearly is the leader in IP routing -- in terms of market share, not technology.

Our only concern is Cisco (CSCO: news, msgs). Others we really don't consider rivals at all.
