EBay ranked top auction site; Survey says Amazon.com is No. 2

Washington, DC, Jul. 28, 1999 (The Content Factory via COMTEX) --

The Internet's most popular auction site is also ranked the best
auction site on the Web, according to a quarterly survey conducted by
Concord, Mass.-based Gomez Advisors. EBay.com was top ranked in a
survey of several hundred sites, 18 of which came in for deeper
analysis based on their longevity, bidding activity and breadth of
products offered. "EBay owns 70 percent of this market and is clearly
the auction leader, and will remain so for a long time," senior analyst
Sue Rothberg told CBS.MarketWatch.com. "But the surprise is that
Amazon.com and Yahoo.com have also relatively recently entered the
market place and have performed very well." Amazon.com was ranked
second and Yahoo.com was third. Speaking of Amazon, Rothberg said the
company's critics who say it's expanding into too many categories too
quickly should learn from Amazon's auction effort. "These guys are a
force to be reckoned with. Their name counts for something with users.
And no one should minimize the attention they have paid to customer
service. They 'get' the Web," she said. Rothberg estimated that auction
sites will account for 15 percent of all e-commerce spending this year,
possibly as much as $5.5 billion.
