Actually, Multiplan was indeed Microsoft's original spreadsheet for the Mac 128K - one of the first applications which shipped for it other than MacWrite/MacPaint. Excel was a completely different code base than Multiplan, and required 512K of RAM to run, and was released in early 1985.

However, it was also a completely new product for the Macintosh. Excel did not exist on Windows until at least a couple of years later. For the first two years in fact, Excel was a very strong reason for buying a Macintosh, since it was the only graphical power-user spreadsheet available.
