I am a Republican and have never been registered as anything but (although I have voted for candidates of both parties based on the merits). I am disappointed with both major parties. The Democrats seem adrift, and have little new to offer. When I speak to Republicans, the ones I know are single-issue focused, and very serious about it--they do not wish to pay as much tax as they pay. I really don't see GENUINE caring about others in either party (I exempt Bob Dole from this, who is a true American hero, but he's retired), and this creates sadness and cynicism.

"If the times have changed to the point where Republicans are more concerned with the well-being of children, the elderly, and finding solutions to welfare, by giving people training and skills to be self-supporting rather than being a burden to the government, than I would rather be a Republican." These were always Republican concerns. Teh difference is Republicans beleive these things ought to be handled locally with as little or preferably no federal government intervention as possible.
