I heartily agree. I confess that when I attended the GSMNA gathering in Boston last November I was about ready to write GSM off. There have been, however, a number of significant events this year that bode very well for the GSM community and in particular Voicestream/Omnipoint:

* The ERICY/QCOM accord which IMO will speed harmonization and convergence of 3G standards.
* Successful bidding by Omnipoint and VoiceStream in the "C" block reaction that guarantees GSM a national footprint (except for New Orleans). The lack of this, IMO, was the primary reason that GSM subscriber growth lagged CDMA & TDMA.
* The GSM/TDMA alliance which affects both standards and coverage.
* The Voicestream/Omnipoint merger itself (with more to come perhaps).
* Both companies dedication to wireless data.
* Introduction of GSM single rate plans similar to (not yet as cost or coverage effective) as AT&T's or BAM's.
* WAP taking off big time

A recognizable national brand name (like Sprint or AT&T) for GSM. Something like MCI would be nice but that is probably wishful thinking. GSM: Alliance does not quite do the job and never will, IMO. Lots to come!
