BJ Services hiring back employees

BJ Services has started rehiring workers, a sign that the oil-field services business may be starting to look up.

The Houston-based service and equipment company "is in the hiring mode," Chief Financial Officer Mike McShane said Tuesday.

It is in the process of hiring about 150 workers in the United States, basically people who were recently laid off. The company's international operations still don't warrant hiring, he said.

BJ Services' is the first talk of hiring heard by oil-field service analyst James K. Wicklund of Dain Rauscher Wessels in Dallas. The nearest to that has been a decision by Halliburton to keep some underutilized employees rather than fire and rehire, Wicklund said.
